UM holds academic events to celebrate new campus inauguration

The University of Macau (UM) is organising a series of academic events to celebrate the inauguration of its new campus, which will take place on 5 November. Wang Yang, vice premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China; Chui Sai On, chief executive of Macao SAR; and Edmund Ho Hau Wah, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference will attend the inauguration ceremony. Other major events around the inauguration day include the 2013 Higher Education Development Summit, the 2013 Cross-Strait Forum on Postgraduate Education, the International Advisory Committee meeting, the Global Leadership Development Programme, the conference on the Roman law system and Macao, the debate competition between UM and Peking University, as well as the variety show.

The 2013 Cross-Strait Forum on Postgraduate Education, the first of this series, kicked off on 3 November. Presidents and professors from numerous well-known universities in the four Chinese-speaking regions of Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China attended the two-day forum to share their research experience with UM students. Participants discussed a wide range of topics, including “how academic research can enrich students’ lives”, “the challenges and excitement of life as a researcher”, “how young researchers should select their research topics and best equip themselves for a research career”, and “why academic research is so important, for society as a whole, and for the enhancement of teaching”. The forum provided a platform for outstanding PhD students from the four Chinese-speaking regions to present their research findings. On the same day, UM’s Mandarin Debate Team and Peking University’s Mandarin Debate Team had a debate competition on the new campus.

The new campus inauguration ceremony will be held on 5 November, in the University Hall on the new campus. It will be attended by approximately 500 people, including officials from the central government, Guangdong government, and Macao SAR government, community leaders, distinguished guests from both at home and abroad, aswell as representatives of UM students, staff and alumni. On the night of the same day, the university will hold a large-scale variety show in the University Hall. Music and cultural associations from UM and Peking University will perform at the show to celebrate the inauguration of the new campus. The day after the inauguration ceremony, UM will hold an International Advisory Committee meeting, which will be attended by experts from the United States, Canada, Portugal, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. These committee members will discuss strategies for further enhancing UM’s teaching, research and governance to increase its international competitiveness.

The 2013 Higher Education Development Summit, organised by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR and hosted by UM, will be held on 6 November. Approximately 100 people will attend the summit to discuss ways to establish an innovative platform for collaboration in education and research amid the increasing globalisation of higher education so that the collaboration mode can play a bigger role in the Greater China region, Asia-Pacific region, and beyond. The 4th Global Leadership Development Programme—Hospitality and MICE: Strategy, Growth and Management, will also be held on the same day. The programme aims to nurture more high-quality talent with a global mindset and international competitiveness for the hospitality and MICE industries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The last of this event series will be a conference on the Roman law system and Macao, which is co-organised by UM, Macao Foundation, Hunan Unviersity, and a unit under the Italian National Research Council. The conference will be attended by experts from Italy, Latin America, Portugal, mainland China, and Macao.
